About Us

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department, a part of the Sarasota County School District, equips young people and adults for both academic success and career success in today’s workforce. CTE programs provide students with the employability and technical skills that individual employers require to be competitive. CTE offers programs from automotive to nursing, providing students with work-based learning opportunities.

In addition, the diverse CTE programs help students improve their math, science, literacy and problem solving skills. CTE students participate in programs resulting in postsecondary certificates or two- and four-year college degrees.

CTE programs are offered at seven middle schools and five high schools conveniently located throughout Sarasota County. Students and adults also have the opportunity to attend a stand-alone facility, the Sarasota County Technical Institute, and/or on-line courses.

Middle school courses enable students to explore career pathways, determine career interests and aptitudes, and develop basic technical skills in a variety of career areas.

High school career-themed small learning communities provide structured career pathways and technical courses in each of sixteen nationally recognized career clusters.

Postsecondary career training programs align with local and regional economic indicators and labor market trends.

In August 2008 the district opened Suncoast Polytechnical High School, a technical high school featuring a rigorous academic and career-focused curriculum with an emphasis on business knowledge and 21st century workplace skills.
